In conversation with Australian Musician editor Greg Phillips, Jason Bonham reflected on the deep personal connection behind his upcoming Australian tour, which honours the 50th anniversary of Physical Graffiti, an album he describes as the defining Led Zeppelin record of his life.

Bonham traced his attachment to the double album back to childhood, recalling how hearing “Kashmir” first sparked a lifelong fascination. The track remains especially meaningful given his father John Bonham’s role in shaping the song’s iconic feel. Jason spoke proudly about his father’s creative process, noting how ideas were often communicated by singing rhythms and motifs rather than through traditional notation.
For the anniversary shows, Bonham’s band performs the entirety of Physical Graffiti, though not in its original running order, a deliberate choice to keep audiences engaged and surprised. He explained that constructing the show revealed new insights into the album’s history, including how some tracks originated in earlier sessions and contain subtle musical callbacks across Led Zeppelin’s catalogue.
Recreating the music live presents unique challenges, particularly capturing the scale and dynamics of songs like “Kashmir.” Bonham emphasised the importance of restraint and groove, describing the track’s power as coming from space and feel rather than sheer volume. His approach draws inspiration from classic live performances, aiming to honour the spirit of the original while delivering a fresh experience.
Beyond the well-known epics, Bonham is especially excited to spotlight deeper cuts such as “Night Flight” and “Down by the Seaside,” songs rarely performed live by Led Zeppelin themselves. Seeing audiences recognise and sing along to these lesser-played tracks has been one of the tour’s most rewarding aspects.
Visually and conceptually, the production also pays homage to the album’s legacy, from Bonham’s visit to the New York building featured on the cover to a show intro imagining the moment fans first heard the album broadcast in full.
As the tour has expanded from an initial plan of around 50 shows to closer to 80 by the time it reaches Australia, Bonham says the performances have evolved into a tightly flowing, immersive experience. Despite the scale of the production, he maintains that the heart of the project remains simple: a group of musicians and fans celebrating music they love.
Ultimately, Bonham views the tour as both a tribute and a shared celebration, bringing the enduring power of Physical Graffiti to new audiences while honouring the legacy that shaped his life and career.
