MORE ABOUT ‘SHIMMER’ AND THE SUMMER OF LOVE ROCKFEST
After a seven-year gap since his Starlight album, Australian rock icon Jon Stevens returns with Shimmer, an uplifting collection of songs that reflect both resilience and renewal. The new album, out October 8, was co-written and recorded with Kevin Savigar and Emerson Swinford from Rod Stewart’s band, a collaboration that began after Stevens supported Stewart on tour across Australia and New Zealand in 2023.

“I toured with Rod, and the boys would be side of stage every night,” Stevens recalls. “They said, ‘We’d love to write some songs with you,’ and I thought, why not? We got together in December in LA, and Shimmer grew from there.”

The result is Stevens’ most optimistic and emotionally open work to date, something he readily acknowledges. “It’s definitely my happiest album,” he says. “I look at the world and we’re just bombarded with negativity. I wanted this record to be brighter, to lift people up.”

While the sound radiates positivity with tracks like Summer of Love, So Beautiful and My Sunshine – there’s emotional depth beneath the shimmer. The title track and Paradise both carry deep personal weight, written in memory of Stevens’ two sisters who passed away on the same date, a year apart. “Shimmer is for them,” he reflects. “It’s about becoming that diamond in the sky, something you hold close forever.”

Visually, Shimmer embraces a psychedelic, dreamlike aesthetic thanks to surrealist artist Caitlyn Grabstein, with each track paired with an original artwork.

Stevens also discussed his forthcoming Summer of Love Rockfest tour, featuring Wolfmother and The Screaming Jets, where he’ll mix hits from his Noiseworks and INXS catalogue with a few new songs. “I’m not one of those people who says, ‘Here’s my new record, that’s all I’m playing,’” he laughs. “People want to have a good time, that’s what rock and roll is about. It’s the last great escape.”

Ever the realist and optimist in equal measure, Stevens has been previewing Shimmer track by track on social media ahead of its release, a gesture he says, of gratitude to his long-time fans. “They’re the ones who’ve been there through everything,” he says. “So I wanted to give it to them first.”

With Shimmer, Jon Stevens reaffirms that his voice, spirit and heart remain unbreakable, still searching for light, still celebrating life, and still rocking as hard as ever.

And see Jon Stevens live this summer!
