Australian singer-songwriter Katy Steele is entering a reflective and creatively liberating phase with her upcoming Undressed project, as revealed in her interview with Australian Musician editor Greg Phillips. The Undressed album to be released on April 24 features 10 tracks (4 covers / 3 Little Birdy reimagined versions / 3 Katy Steele reimagined songs – including one unreleased new song recorded in LA ) and will be available on vinyl, backed by a national tour which begins on April 23 starting in Hobart.

At the heart of the conversation is the origin of Undressed, a stripped-back album and tour concept that began almost accidentally. Initially prompted by her long-time publisher’s request for acoustic versions of songs for sync opportunities, the project quickly took on deeper meaning when Steele entered the studio during a personally difficult time following the death of her father. What emerged was a raw, instinctive recording process, songs captured largely in single takes, without overthinking or excessive production. Steele describes the experience as freeing, allowing her to embrace simplicity and resist the urge to over-produce arrangements, something she admits can often bog down the creative process.
The album itself revisits key moments from her catalogue, including the reworked “Relapse” and tracks like “Signal to You,” alongside carefully chosen covers such as “Perfect Day” and “Because the Night”. These selections reflect both her personal history, particularly her time living and writing in New York and her formative musical influences, including artists like Lou and Patti. Steele speaks about discovering music as a teenager as a way of finding her identity, and that same emotional authenticity underpins Undressed. The EP, recorded largely in a single day, also signals the beginning of an ongoing series, with Steele already framing it as “Volume One.”
A key theme throughout the interview is balance between creativity and daily life. Now a mother and an independent artist managing her own career, Steele reflects on the challenges of time, decision-making, and finishing projects. The stripped-back nature of Undressed is partly a creative choice but also a practical one, enabling her to continue producing music efficiently without sacrificing emotional depth.
The accompanying national tour, kicking off in late April, mirrors the album’s ethos. Presented in an intimate duo format, the shows will feature Steele alongside a multi-instrumentalist, incorporating acoustic and electric elements, piano textures, and vocal harmonies. While there will be a structured setlist, Steele hints at a thoughtfully curated performance with interludes and a strong sense of flow. Importantly, the shows aim to strip away the artifice of modern live production, no heavy backing tracks, just honest, human performances where imperfections are part of the experience.
The tour will travel across Australia, including dates in Hobart, Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra and Perth, bringing this pared-back experience to intimate venues around the country.
