Five-time GRAMMY-nominated guitarist and songwriter Kenny Wayne Shepherd returns to Australia for the first time since 2018 to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of his landmark debut Ledbetter Heights. Kenny Wayne Shepherd sat down with Australian Musician’s Greg Phillips to discuss his long-awaited return to Australia, marking the 30th anniversary of his debut album Ledbetter Heights and a tour that reflects both his deep blues roots and his evolution as a musician.

Shepherd spoke enthusiastically about rehearsals for the tour, which have been taking place in his newly built studio. The anniversary shows bring together past and present members of his band, including the return of drummer Sam Bryant for the early part of the tour, reconnecting Shepherd with musicians who were there at the very beginning of his career. Longtime collaborator Chris Layton will rejoin the band after his commitments with Billy Gibbons.
Reflecting on Ledbetter Heights, Shepherd revisited the experience of recording the album as a teenager, recalling the excitement and uncertainty of making his first major label record in Memphis at just 17 years old. To celebrate the milestone, Shepherd has re-recorded the entire album, giving fans a fresh perspective on the songs, most notably featuring Noah Hunt on vocals, something listeners have long wondered about. While much of the original guitar work remains intact, Shepherd noted subtle changes informed by three decades of growth, with the track “Riverside” receiving the most significant reinterpretation.
Guitar tone and authenticity were central to the project, with Shepherd returning to the same guitars, amplifiers, and pedals used on the original recordings, many of which he still owns. He also discussed faithfully preserving the structure of fan favourites like “Aberdeen,” while acknowledging small sonic differences between versions.
Looking ahead to the Australian shows, Shepherd confirmed that the tour will feature every song from Ledbetter Heights performed live for the first time ever, alongside variations for festival appearances such as Byron Bay Bluesfest. Australian audiences can also expect the full modern Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band experience, including the horn section that has become a defining element of his live sound in recent years.
Beyond the anniversary, Shepherd reflected on the profound influence of B.B. King, describing him as a father figure and lifelong inspiration, and spoke warmly about collaborations with blues legends such as Bobby Rush. He also touched on the perspective gained during the COVID lockdown years, valuing the rare extended time spent with his family.
When asked about the future, Shepherd made it clear his passion remains undiminished. He expressed a strong desire to continue building his audience in Australia, where he has close family ties and revealed a personal ambition to one day perform at the Sydney Opera House.
