Suzanne Vega returns to Australia for the first time in nine years and will perform a career-spanning show including favourites like Tom’s Diner, Luka, Marlene On The Wall, and many more, plus songs from her latest album, Flying with Angels, which was released in May this year to critical acclaim. Widely regarded as one of the foremost songwriters of her generation, Suzanne Vega emerged as a leading figure of the folk revival of the early 1980s. Accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, Vega sang what has been called contemporary folk or neo-folk songs of her own creation in Greenwich Village clubs. Since the release of her self-titled, critically acclaimed 1985 debut album, she has given sold-out concerts in many of the world’s best-known venues. Known for performances that convey deep emotion, Vega’s distinctive, “clear, unwavering voice” (Rolling Stone) has been described as “a cool, dry sandpaper-brushed near-whisper” by The Washington Post, with NPR Music noting that she “has been making vital, inventive music” throughout the course of her decades-long career.

FUN FACT: How Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner” Helped Create the MP3
In the 1980s, German engineer Karlheinz Brandenburg and his team were developing a revolutionary way to compress digital audio without sacrificing sound quality, a concept that would eventually become the MP3 format. While early algorithms could handle instruments, they consistently failed when it came to reproducing the subtle nuances of the human voice.
Brandenburg came across a review describing how audio engineers tested speakers using Suzanne Vega’s a cappella track “Tom’s Diner” because of its clear, pure vocal tone. He decided to use the same recording as the ultimate test for his compression system. When the team first encoded it, Vega’s voice was badly distorted, “we managed to destroy Suzanne Vega’s voice,” Brandenburg later admitted.
For over a year, “Tom’s Diner” became both a benchmark and a torment for the researchers. Each improvement to the algorithm was judged by how faithfully it could reproduce Vega’s warm, unaccompanied vocals. Once they finally succeeded, the breakthrough laid the foundation for high-quality digital compression, leading directly to the creation of the MP3, a format that transformed how the world listens to music.
Today, Brandenburg is known as the “father of MP3,” and Vega is affectionately referred to as its “mother,” thanks to the role her song played in perfecting the technology that powered the digital music revolution.
